Title: Song Specific Patches for Cover Band using Rev2
Post by: jgriffter on July 18, 2022, 11:30:30 AM
Hello everyone, new forum member that just added a Rev2 to my keyboard arsenal.  Great keyboard with tons of flexibility!

I work in a cover band and am trying to integrate the Rev2 in to my setup for 80's cover songs.  In an effort to get this going more quickly, I have searched for patch banks to purchase that would help me.  I have bought several already but have yet to find a set that really points patches to specific songs.  I have found a few - some Phil Collins, some Tears for Fears, some Floyd, ELP, VH Jump, etc.  I have been surprised given the popularity of the Prophet family, that there are not more song specific patch banks out there.  Stuff like Cars (not just one or two sounds), Duran Duran, Fixx, Howard Jones, Depeche, Furs, etc - the songs that everyone like to hear/dance to in clubs.  I know these groups used a lot of different synths but with the Rev2 being so versatile, I was hoping others might have already done some of this and there might be some true song specific patch banks for purchase.

I have done some work trying to build some sounds myself and the Rev2 is great for that - much better than my skill level.  I have bought several of the "classic Prophet" packs to help but any suggestions of more complete song specific patch banks?

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

.. you're right though, the Rev2 has a "wide identity range"... its very strong in its ability to sound like other synths.

I think the reason you don't see more patch recreations offered for sale is because it's much harder (as you pointed out) to perfectly replicate existing patches.  Part of this is because it usually requires not just duplicating the sound itself but also capturing the essence of whatever production techniques surround it..  So it's possible to labor for hours to achieve one sound and still feel it's not good enough to market it as a replica.

Depeche Mode released some of the actual patches used on Playing the Angel for the Access Virus...  but play them by themselves and you quickly realize that much of the magic happens during production.

Beware folks selling patches on YT that have disabled comments, they probably did so for a reason :)

Well I have to think this "comment" is directed at Robust. We keep the YT comments disabled for several reasons. Nothing that you need to "beware" of though.

1. People can listen and make up their own minds unmolested by the mob/influencer/shill mentality that often infests those comments.

2. Our contact info is readily available on our homepage. We communicate with our customers and potential customers all the time. Just today I had a support question from a customer about the Sub37 patches he just purchased. (It was answered and solved in less than 30 minutes) We take pride in the fact that any customer questions/issues are answered in a matter of hours, not days.

2.5. Since we've been doing this (3.5 years), we've had exactly 2 refunds issued. The folks in question purchased the same exact sound set twice. The refunds were issued promptly without question even though our site states that returns/refunds are not possible on digital downloads for obvious reasons.

3. Really don't have the time to open, edit and keep track of yet another social media communication channel. Youtube will be just fine without the extra clicks. (Also own and run a small project studio that is open to the public)

Sorry to go off topic...

Sincerely,
Randy

Actually no, it wasn't direct your way at all.  At the time I was thinking about a different patch vendor (who to my knowledge does not post here) that sells recreations of famous patches, but they are demo'd using (conveniently as a backing track) the original track, in order to give the impression the patch bank will sound exactly like the original (and I seriously doubt they are even licensed to do that with the original track).

I haven't actually had a chance to look at your offerings but a brief glance didn't reveal anything that would strike me as sketchy.  The fact that you're here participating on this forum is a feather in your cap I think.

I will say I do like to see comments under sound banks.... seeing some negative feedback is less likely to turn me off as much as no comments.

I designed a decent amount of famous patches for latest VCM++ Volume 2 soundset:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIXqAbWUskY

Not a lot of the specific bands you mentioned, but does include some sounds for Rush, Tears for Fears, The Cars, Prince, Michael Jackson, Genesis, Phil Collins, Radiohead, Muse, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Vangelis, Aha, Journey, Daft Punk, Europe, Kraftwerk, Madonna, Boards of Canada, M83, and some other Soundtracks or Cinematic Sounds.

I agree 100% with @LPF83 - from a sound designer perspective, it requires much more work to produce good famous song patches... because everyone has heard the originals dozens or hundreds of times and knows the tones intently -- the amount of critique that will be placed on them is probably 100x as much as any original patches.   Also, as LPF83 points out, on album tracks there is often post production eq/compression/effects/doubling/mastering applied, or little sound quirks or voice variances that are very specific to certain vintage synths.  I probably spend 5x as long on designing a given famous patch.  It can be frustrating at times, as the post production aspects of an album tone are often very hard or impossible to replicate on the synth alone... and without them, patches often don't sound right.

Totally agree that if you hear patch demos that play along/over the actual original artist tracks, you're not really hearing a good example of the patch... The original song background, even if at a lower level, will fill in all the unique harmonic content and character, which will make it sound like the patch is much closer than it really is.

Anyways, good luck in your search, and cover band!  Rev2 is definitely a super versatile instrument that can get close to a lot of classic song tones.
