Title: tuning behaviour in PU2 mode
Post by: 666 on May 13, 2021, 03:39:36 PM
i noticed some inconsistent tuning in pu2 mode. really sounds like vintage knob is turned on, but it's not.

this is a single saw in pu2 mode, detune 5, vintage 4 and after calibrating several times. is this normal behaviour? could someone try to reproduce this please?

it's a prophet 10 btw

Mine doesn't sound quite that bad, are you sure local mode is off and you're not getting some MIDI loop behavior?

5 is way up there... IMHO the detune levels on PU2 are musically useful only up to detune-3 max (usually 2) if you are in 10 voice mode.   If I put it into 5 voice mode it sounds good up to detune 4 due to note stealing (which in effect isn't really giving PU2 detune 4 at that point but it still can sound good).

I personally would like the detune levels to be a bit more subtle (more of a tapering curve with each increment past 2) but have a feeling this may have been an intentional design decision to have a good detune range for 5 voice mode and P5 owners without making the detune level behavior inconsistent based on the number of voices (that would get weird for sound design).   And the reality is that if you're playing 10 voices, it's already going to be so thick that it's usually better to dial down the detune a bit.  And if you do need more detuning, add a little vintage knob, or mix in OSC with fine tune.

So basically at detune-5, I wouldn't worry about it sounding bad.

thanks. no midi connected. it's also there in unison detune 2 or 3, i just recorded 5, so the difference between voices is clearly audible.
