Title: Synchronous program changes - better way than shift?

So I'm aware that for synchronous program changes you can hold the shift button while changing patches - which works but I've found a bit unreliable in live settings as it can be a bit fiddly (those buttons don't have a lot of travel).
Has anyone found a way to enable synchronous changes by default or possibly a way to do it via midi? Any other tips to increase my chances of getting a good change? I usually end up just hitting the reset button until I get it back in sync when I've messed it up.
