Title: Loading P5 patches from original cassette tape???
Post by: engineerjoel on October 19, 2020, 11:10:26 AM
I still have the original P5 data cassette tape that came with my Prophet 5 Rev 3.3 back in 1981 as well as a backup cassette tape of all my custom patches on the last bulk back-up that I did before selling my Prophet in 1987.

My question: would it be possible to “somehow” load all of my old custom patches back into the the new Rev 4 P5?  If so, how can this be done?

Thanks,

If you can find a Prophet 5 with factory MIDI, then you can load your patches to it via your cassette, and once they're in there, dump them from the instrument as sysex file.

The Rev4 P5/10 will read the sysex dumped from the vintage instruments with factory MIDI.

There's no way to load patches into the Rev4 P5/10 directly from your cassette.

Would be nice if Sequential could offer the original factory patches in sysEx for new rev4 owners.... or are they already in the unit?

They are already in there (programs 511-558).

The original Prophet-5 factory program patch sheets have just been added to the support section for the Prophet-5/10: https://yo41t1y5gos9jw8f3lptw0xo-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Original-Prophet-5-Patch-Sheets-1.1.pdf

That's great to hear about loading original Prophet 5 SysEx. That removes a tool I'd planned and started on: to convert older Prophet 5 SysEx patch dumps to the Prophet 5 Rev4 SysEx. I may still work on it for those that only have audio or memory dumps.

Online I found 3 banks of 40 patches each for the Prophet 5 Rev 3. Not sure how genuine they are.

What is funny is that the Prophet 5 sysex is faulty in a way that it does start with F0 but doesn't end with F7, but again an F0. This will throw many modern software off, including my KnobKraft Orm I fear. I built loading of Prophet 5 Rev 3 sysex into the adaption posted here in the other thread, it would be interesting to learn if the synth will digest it when sent from the software - I think it will omit the faulty ending F0. Some deeper hacking required to get this to work, I think, but maybe the firmware from Sequential also accepts it without the F0?

If the SysEx files don't work, you can also use the patch sheets from this site: https://sites.google.com/site/klmar016/home/synth/prophet5
