Hi all. I'm trying to change or tweak factory installed patches but cannot despite knob twiddling etc. I'm assuming they ar ROM only and cannot be written to? Is there a workaround say saving a patch to a user file and going from there? Sorry for the newb question. :)

The four User Banks (U1-U4) are an exact copy of the four Factory Banks (F1-F4) when you purchase the Rev2 new. You can only save over patches in the User Banks... the factory banks are your permanent backups of the originals.
(Note: there are actually ways to overwrite factory patches via more advanced means (sysex), if you use up all your user patches and need more room in the future, but you've 512 user slots to work with... so, not a problem for most.
But, yeah, just edit and write to the U1-U4 banks and you should be set.

Cheers creativespiral. Is there a way to reverse engineer the factory patches to see how they were created?

The following thread has a PDF download that lists the parameters/values for the factory patches.
https://forum.sequential.com/index.php/topic,2455.0.html
You can also use the Compare button on the panel to show the stored value of a given parameter.
And finally, if you download a Rev2 editor program like Soundtower or Codeknobs, you can have a visual GUI on computer to see values and edit them.

I can second the recommendation for Soundtower editors, I have three of them to date and will be getting the P5/P10 version when I order my synth.
