Title: OB-6 module powering up issue
Post by: soulintent on August 20, 2020, 11:20:21 AM
Hi guys,

Been having an issue with my Ob-6 module where one day I went to turn it on and all the lights flashed once, then darkness.

I've been speaking to Sequential support who suggested I remove and reinstall the ribbon cable and the voice cards incase they had come loose, but this didn't resolve the issue.

I have even sent it back to Sequential in San Fran, where support told me the ribbon card wasn't fully seated when they received it and its been working fine while they've been testing it.

I received it back yesterday, turned it on and it was working (hooray!!) so put tuned it off and put it back on my music desk next to my Prophet 12 where she belongs.

Unfortunately today I went to turn it on, and ....yes, you guessed it....all lights flash then darkness.

I'm absolutely devastated!! It's cost me over £200 in shipping and customs (I live in the UK and sent it back to Sequential in the States) and it's still not working properly.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

EDIT 20/08/20 @ 19:45 - Well after shouting at it a lot, I also removed and rotated the ribbon cable which seems to have resolved the issue. Though I'm not going to get excited just yet as tomorrow it may well act up again. I'll post my findings tomorrow

Just popped upstairs, thought I'd turn it again....and back to darkness

Try this: press and hold the "HOLD" button whislt powering the module, and keep holding that button. Do the lights all come on and stay on, then? If so, then it's not a PSU issue.
Release the HOLD button, turn off the module, then turn it back on. Does it power on normally after all of that?

Hi Alain, thanks for the advice.

So this morning it's turning on fine, though I did boot up first time following your advice of holding down 'HOLD'.

I've turned it off and on 3 times and it seems to be booting fine at the moment.

It's so frustrating how temperamental it's being, feels like Russian Roulette every time I flick the power switch.

Can’t you claim the import taxes back if it was for a repair to something you’d already bought?

UPS had it held at Stansted. I had to send scans of my original payment invoice plus the repair invoice.

I was hoping this would prove it was a repair and I already owned the item but annoying they still ended up charging me £60 customs/tax/whatever to release it.

I haven't looked into trying to claim this back as I very much doubt I can and at this point my energy is better spent on catching up in the studio.

It's been emotional, as they say  :-\

And just as I finished that reply above, the Ob-6 has turned itself off and won't reboot.

Fuse in plug had blown...but does this hint towards something fishy going on with the internal PSU?

EDIT: 21/08/20 15:49 - It's not the fuse, it just happened to work for 10mins after changing the fuse...back to not turning on agani  >:(

Definitely sounds like a power supply issue. I had a Novation Nova desktop module some years ago that would power itself off and back on randomly. It turned out that I had a defective PSU, because everything went back to normal when Novation sent me a new one. But it was an external PSU so it was easy to replace. In the OB6, it's internal. But it shouldn't be too difficult to replace it either (one connector, and a few screws).
This is definitely a problem that should be covered under warranty.

Yeh I think you could be right.

Unfortunately its out of warranty but maybe I can get a PSU off them fairly cheaply. From looking inside the unit I'm fairly sure I could replace it myself.

Awaiting a response from DS support.

Any update on this? I have the same/similar issue.

it's the ribbon cable inside. I noticed if I folded it back on itself the unit turns on every time.

I reported this to Sequential and asked if they could send me a replacement cable ...but never heard back.

It's working....I don't don't dare move it
