Title: Should it distort this easily?
Post by: Abhoth on October 02, 2019, 07:59:09 AM
I use the init sound, change to sine osc and set the volume knob to twelve o’clock. If I play, say, a three note minor chord it is very obviously distorted. If I turn the volume down to 9 o’clock it is clean.

So far I have just kept the volume low, thinking it was something in my signal path that I could sort out when I had the time. But now that I have done some testing it is clearly the Prophet itself that distorts. So now I am worried there is something wrong with my unit...

I've never had any issues like this, but I wanted to specifically test the scenario you describe.  Starting with an init patch, changing oscillator one to sine, and playing a chord - no audible distortion, and checking with an oscilloscope shows a nice smooth wave.  That's with the master volume all the way up.

It's always possible there's something up with your Prophet X, but I'd check the rest of the signal path as you had planned first.  The synth does put out a relatively hot signal, so it could well clip an input with too much gain dialed in.  Once you've eliminated other possibilities, don't hesitate to reach out to Sequential support.  They're always eager and willing to help.

Good to know. I’ve done some thorough trouble-shooting, and am unfortunately certain it is the PX output. I’ve contacted support. Thank you for testing!
