Title: Replacement for my current setup?
Post by: TonyG on March 20, 2019, 09:09:53 AM
Hey guys,

So my main income comes from weddings 🤮 but I do lots of other stuff too.  I know that the XL will cover me for my ‘other stuff’ but as far as my wedding gig goes, I’m not sure.  Here’s what I currently do;

Nord Stage 2 - mainly piano/ep/clav/Hammond/

Roland Fantom G6 - horns/strings/sample playback/leads/pads/talk box.

I’d love one board to replace both of the above.  I do tend to play both keyboards at once.

What do you lot think?  There isn’t a demo prophet x anywhere near me, so from a sonic point of view, I don’t know.  From what I’ve heard online, I think it’s cool, but my main concerns are;

Available polyphony for what I’m doing

Quality of nord type samples (pianos,etc)

Hi Tony

Ive just bought the XL. I was thinking about changing my Roland RD2000 and my Roland System 8 synth for it.
It can of course easily cover my synth needs, but Im not sure that Im willing to sell my RD2000 yet.
There is now 32 voices so that would maybe be enough if you arent using pedaling and crazy runs up and down at the same time... the pianosound is fine, I think I have some tweaking to do (got it yesterday so there is still a lot of buttons I have to learn ;-))

What Im right now are thinking is the feeling of the keys..I change between thinking they are fine, and that I dont totally love them... I think maybe it is a question about getting to know them. Its now hammer action but a spring that, so there isnt the same “pianofeel”...

And then you will miss one octave..

I hope you can use my answer for anything.. Maybe you can buy it and send it back if you dont like it - thats what I have done since there wasnt anyone in my nabourghood either ;-) (but I dont think I will send it back...)

Thanks man.

Yeah, missing the extra octave.  I’ll actually be missing more than that as I’ll tend to have to split the keyboard on most of the patches.  For that, perhaps a small Midi keyboard just to trigger a second bank of sounds?

The polyphony is the main issue I think.  32 voices is that for sample playback?  I thought it was 8 in stereo or 16 in mono for samples

New mode added in last update. Single sample layer and single digital oscillator through two filters (of the 16) in stereo. Samples can bypass the LPF too. Nice new option for additional flexibility.
