Title: Recommendation for new patches for the Rev2?
Post by: DevonB on March 14, 2019, 09:41:36 PM
Just went through the factory programs for the Rev2, and was pretty disappointed. Was surprised on how much overlap there was, and not a fan of sequenced/weird noise patches either. These are better than the Evolver sound set (Sorry to say, but those are the absolute worst sound set I've ever heard come with a synth) but not as good as the Prophet 12 factory banks, which I do like quite a bit so far.

So first off, are there any free preset banks out there? Be nice to find some 'classic' sounds.

What about good, musically-useful for money patches? I'm willing to pay $10-$20 for a patch bank, but I cannot stomach $35-$40 for a patch bank, sorry guys. I'd prefer to hear recommendations from someone other than the patch creator for obvious reasons. ;)

I'm relatively new to the Rev2 myself, and I haven't actively sought out patch banks, but I'll bite:

Can you give us a better idea of what you mean by "classic"?  To me a "classic" analog synth sound is something in the Wendy Carlos/Jean Michel Jarre/Tomita/Vangelis vein, but you might have a totally different thing in mind.

Have you tried tweaking the presets to get them closer to what you want? The Rev2 has two sequencers and an arpeggiator, so yes the built-ins demonstrate those a lot. They're also easy to disable if the base tone is appealing to you. (Editing will also give you an appreciation for the effort needed to get a single patch just right, so maybe that $40 bank of 128 will seem like a deal.) I personally enjoy sound design nearly as much as composing or performing, so I fully expected to be tweaking presets at a minimum when I bought the Rev2.

My guess is that the $20 patch bank, if you find it, will contain fewer than half as many good programs as the $40 bank.

Yes, you nailed it. Also, classic Prophet 5 sounds since this is its legacy. I like musically useful presets. Not sound effect patches. Not the music was written for me with a sequencer and I hold one key patches. Just a good variety of sounds to write music with. The Prophet 12 set nailed it with quality and variety. I don't like all of them, but I like quite a few.

I'm not interested in sound design, and never have been. Sure, I can and do tweak sounds to taste all the time. Sadly, with the way my studio is set up, I can't sit in front of the unit and play at the same time. I'd have to buy an editor to do that. Also, a patch doesn't have to be overly complex to be good either.

I wouldn't count on that. Price does not equal and has never equaled quality, it's just a price. I've bought and/or reviewed plenty of sound sets that are fantastic even in the last few years that are in the under $20 range that sound great. I've also gotten some duds too. It would be nice if it was possible to play a $40 set to see if one even likes it, but obviously that's not possible. There are certain sound designers that I know do a fantastic job (Howard Scarr, Brok Landers of Big Tone, Rob Papen, etc.) I know what to expect from these guys. The 2 soundbanks by Two Quiet Suns for the Evolver was fantastic (and made my keep the Evolver). However I know there are plenty of guys who like to 'experiment' and make weird noises. Ya, not my thing. There are plenty of so-so to not so good amateur sound designers too. Obviously this is all my opinion. Thankfully there are sound demos to get somewhat of an idea for most banks these days. It's not 1995 anymore! Woohoo! But I don't like blowing a lot of money on something if I don't know if I'm going to like it. Then there are the free banks, and some of those are better than the paid for banks....

Check out the Geosynths patches.

You can also try to import the original Prophet 8 patches, if you didnīt try so far. They are pretty useful if you apply some Rev2 effects :)

I did. I need to listen some more, but wasn't overly impressed so far either. But that is a good point, all the P08 soundsets are compatible with the Rev2?

And is Sound Tower the only librarian for the Rev2?

I suppose not as a rule, but I think it would still work out that way on average if there were enough choices out there to do a valid analysis.

Anyway,  I hope you've browsed this forum enough to see that [at least] two regular contributors here have recently released patch banks for the Rev2.  They're both at the $40 price point...

I'm guessing Razmo's set (https://forum.sequential.com/index.php/topic,3269.0.html) would be more to your taste, but keston's experimental set (https://forum.sequential.com/index.php/topic,3360.0.html) does include some nice musical ones as well.  Both have links to thorough demonstrations.

I'm almost ready to release my first bank of patches for the Rev2. Well...Half a bank. (64 Presets) I just posted the first installment of demos on SoundCloud. The patch names are in the comments. Sorry, no videos yet.

Randy these patches are freakin rad man!  The bass and pad intro patches are sick.  Is this all REV2, no outside processing or FX?

By your logic, free presets would be junk, while expensive presets would be the best. Thats simply not the case.

I'm just looking for banks at a price point Im willing to accept. There will always be price points for anything Im not willing to accept (Prophet X) vs ones that I am (Prophet Rev2). People should charge what they believe something is worth. Just doesnt mean Im willing to buy or that Ill be interested.

How much is the Razmo preset pack?

Wow, that is really appreciated!!!  Thanks for the SC comment as well. I capture everything into Nuendo through an Audient ASP-880. Nothing was done to the sounds on the way in or during the editing process. I use Steinberg's Maximizer at the default setting on the stereo out when I export the assembled demos. Just a little volume boost. That's it. I am finishing up all the little details right now and should have this available tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks Again!

I have bought some banks and my favourite bank is still "PROPHET CLASSICS" Soundset by AnalogAudio1.
The downside is some almost identical patches.

Thanks for the recommendation. I almost bought these last week, then got too busy. How bad are we talking here? Like 2-3 duplicates or 10-20? What's your second favorite? Did you buy the other soundbank from him, Exploring Prophet?

Thanks!

Well with duplicates I mean tweaks between patches and honestly you have some constraints on the sound palette in an analogue synthesizer. I think the first bank is the best one but that could be just because I bought it first and was immediately blown away hearing all the warm and useful sounds.

Seconding Geosynth's and Analog Audio's patches. I have em both and they are awesome.

If your looking for a more vintage vibe across all of your patches I highly recommend scoping out this post:
https://forum.sequential.com/index.php/topic,3468.0.html - specifically the "28ED5" tuning IMO.

It takes a bit of setup but its highly worth it. This is essentially a micro-tuning on a global level that de-tunes your Rev2 over the octaves. I prefer it to OSC Slop and the fact that its global means it gives your Rev2 the same slightly out of calibration vibe on every patch you use. I'm experimenting with it now and haven't found a patch or situation it does help for my needs. This would make a great addition to any of the packs mentioned if your looking for a more vintage/organic sound.

I attached a demo of an Init patch in stock tuning then with the 28ED5 de-tuning.
