Title: Organizing programs
Post by: Nimi on February 07, 2019, 12:19:53 PM
Hey all

is there any way to organize programs on the Prophet x? should be a basic feature but seems it is not exist.
lets say I want Program 3 on User bank 1 to be located number 1 - how do I switch between the program slots without deleting one of them? at the moment, by pressing SAVE and then using the soft knobs to change program location while saving, it will erase the previous one that was there.
I saw there is a sound manager software that might let you do so, but it doesn't make any sense that I must have a software for this kind of action (and for 79 $ :-\)

any ideas?

Peace.

Take a look at Play List, described on page 83 (Play List) of the Prophet X/XL 1.0 manual. The button for it is to the right of the center display. There are a total of 10 sets of 4 lists of 4 programs each, for quick recall of programs. Hope that helps.

Hey, thanks for that. yes of course I know the PLAY LIST option, but I think it is much more convenient just to scroll up and down through the presets. Unfortunately (in my opinion) the PLAY LIST option is not such a good feature to a very good idea...
anyway, I don't understand why cant you just change programs slots easily... :-\

You can. Press Save/Load and you can easily choose a new slot for the current program using the soft knobs above the main display. Since the factory programs are duplicated in the user banks you'll always be able to retrieve a program and save it to a new location if you overwrite it, if your intention is to keep the factory programs intact for the user banks.

Yes I also know that, but that is not what I meant.
If under USER bank 1 I have few new presets that I've created, If I want to change or manage their locations, It is just not possible without erasing one over another.
For example, if I would like  Programs 12, 34, and 45 to be in slots 1, 2 and 3, just to change programs order. I actually cant do that ha?

You cannot move programs without overwriting others, that is correct. Hence the comment about re-copying factory programs back to user banks if you need them in the lineup right there. Because the factory programs are doubled, you can overwrite the entirety of the user banks and not lose any of the factory programs.

Your other option is to use a librarian software editor for organizing programs, which would allow you to do it non-destructively. Soundtower offers one, there may be others. Laser Mammoth makes a very useful and free browser based librarian that covers many of our instruments, but I don't think the Prophet X has been adapted yet.

I think you are right... There is a lot of great patches in the factories library, and I also want to have my own selection.

Personnaly I think it's a mess. With 1024 patches without classification it is impossible to find just a good piano or strings when you need it.
OK, there is Playlists... But it's impossible to lock them. So it's very easy to just change your selection by selecting an other patches without disable the Playlist option.

For my opinion, with all this (great) synths created by Dave Smith/Sequential team, it will be very interesting to have a tool to Manage library patches for the all family. I don't talk about a software to create patches, but just to backup/reorganise/restore user libraries. Not a complex task, but very qualitative service for customers.

God, can you hear us ?  ;)

Being able to narrow patches down through a tagging system onboard with DSI synths would be a godsend. The Moog One has this and it is so much easier to get to a sound you're looking for, like using software packages like Komplete.

The big dogs like Korg, Yamaha, etc. do this, not sure why smaller companies haven't hopped on board with this with how many patches these units can store.

I would definitely be in favor of a tagging system for presets!  It might be impractical to retrofit into the existing front panel without getting really obtuse, but it would be interesting to try:

This is just a thought experiment.  It's obviously not how things work today, and it may not be remotely practical for reasons of preset size and memory layout or compatibility with sysex dumps.

If we use only Playlist to select our favorites, I suggest to maintain the Playlist button (with blinking) to modify the patches.
And If we only toggle Playlist we will only can use our favorite but not modify it.
With this we can avoid to modify by error...

It looks like free the browser-based WebMIDI sysex utility Laser Mammoth now supports the Prophet X. This is a useful tool that we recommend to folks who are looking for an easy way to shuffle programs around.

Exactly !

The F0F7 has been very reactive. We tested it yesterday and it works like a charm.
Thank you again to F0F7 team !
