Title: Questions from an Evolver desktop owner looking to acquire a PEK
Post by: darcynader on August 29, 2018, 06:35:21 PM
Hi all,
I recently bought an Evolver desktop and have been blown away by it. The tonality, the way the patches seem to literally "evolve" in time and space... it's not like any synth I've ever heard.

Naturally I want to try it out with poly now and have my eye on a PEK.

Before I pull the trigger, I have a few questions, hopefully someone who has the PEK (or even better, the PEK and the desktop) can help answer:

1. From the specs it looks like the keybed is semi-weighted. I've had the chance to play the Rev2 and the Mopho x4 - does the keybed feel similar to those synths' beds? Obviously I know the PEK will have some age to it so with years of playing the keys might not be as "stiff" but wondering about how they compare if anyone's been able to try the newer DSI keys.

2. Are the patches between the desktop and the PEK the same?

Thanks in advance for any insights

The program format is exactly the same between the various Evolver models. However, program names are separate sysex messages not supported by Evolver desktop. So if dumping Evolver desktop programs until one of the other Evolver models the sound will change but the program name will stay the same.

Also, some say there are sonic variations between the various Evolver models.

In any case welcome to the Evolver Club (TM). While we are all a friendly bunch nasty sounds will sometimes emerge from our studios.

The Poly Evolver Keyboard has a light touch.  Although I haven't played a Rev2, I can confidently say the latter key bed is superior to the former.  That's not to say the PEK has a cheap feel, but it is on the lighter side, as far as they go.
