Title: Looking for some good piano patches
Post by: Prophet22 on August 26, 2018, 11:03:36 AM
Looking for good piano patches like a Steinway grand piano or something like this. Either rev 2 or prophet 8 patches.

Moin Prophet22,

don't want to disappoint You, but probably You won't succeed in producing realistic grand piano sounds on any classical (VCO with "normal" wavefoms and subtractive filtering, that is) synthesizer.

All "famous" grand piano patches heavily rely on sample-waveforms. The reason for that lies mainly in the attack phase, where non-harmonic effects shape the sound.
You may read about this in the following article
https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/synthesizing-pianos

If You want to try anyway, You could start from there (scroll down and read the next pages) and try to adapt that to the P'08.

The whole series BTW is highly recommendable:

I agree with Martin - really no way to accurately imitate a piano on an analogue synth.

I also agree with Martin that the Synth Secrets is a fantastic series - a must read if you have not done so already.

Prophet 22, the Prophet 08 is a 2 Digitally Controlled Oscillator subtractive synthesizer, so it is unable to precisely emulate all the transients that occur when a Steinway piano note is struck. BUT, there is a way to emulate this sound on the Prophet 08. Martin gives some good advice as the SOS article he recommends reading is great! I would suggest you also look at this article, as this was my starting point for generating quite a few good piano patches on my Prophet 08:

the JX-10 was also a 2 DCO synth! Enjoy cooking up some sounds!
