Title: Two questions from a new owner
Post by: mildwest on July 06, 2018, 10:38:13 AM
Hello,

Just received my X late yesterday afternoon and really just got to start digging in this morning. A couple questions after my initial play. When I turn the synth on before it gets to the boot screen it looks like I turned on an old TV set where you could see the static. After a couple seconds it goes to the boot screen. Is that normal and expected behavior?

Second question, I have noticed clickiness on the attack on a few of the first patches. Most notably the Prophet 5bass, which is the second or third patch. The only way I could dial it out was turning off the velocity, which completely changed the sound. The 80s synth brass also had some clickiness that disappeared when I rolled the VCA up to about 6 on the attack. It's not all patches, but again just making sure what I am hearing is what everyone else is hearing too. Thanks in advance.

Mark

Regarding the "static" displayed when you turn it on.  Mine certainly behaves in the same manner, and I'm assuming that this, like the screen saving behavior where screens will go black if you haven't interacted with the unit for a while, are intended to counteract the bad image retention habits typical of OLED displays.

Click-y attacks are to be expected with free-running waveforms and fast attack envelopes.  The oscillator section of the manual addresses this explicitly:

"When the amplifier envelope is set for a fast attack, this can cause a soft, but detectable, pop or click at the beginning of a note because the note might be gated on at a point in the wave’s cycle other than a zero crossing."

So you have a few options: embrace the click as part of the sound, turn the Wave Reset parameter on for all oscillators, or soften the attack a little with a tweak to the amplitude envelope.

Enjoy your new instrument!  It's astonishingly capable.

Thanks Lady Gaia, loving it, but since this may be the only one I ever see in person I thought I would check just to be sure. Too excited to read the manual thoroughly, but I have added it to my iPad to start reading tonight.

It's normal... REV2 does the same thing... if you switch it off and on again quickly, you'll notice that the last screen you had before shutting it down shows initially... but with a few pixels wrong here and there... the longer you wait, the more you get static... it's simply the capacitors powering the screen that takes some time to discharge I guess... the screen memory of the display obviously hold random data when switched off for some time... thus the static display...
