Title: "secret" buttons combinations list
Post by: AlainHubert on March 24, 2018, 09:29:37 PM
Hi all.

I'd like for someone from DSI to list all the "secret" combinations of buttons to gain access to hidden features, like display internal temperature (hold+portamento+3), and clearing temperature tables (manual+3), do this at your own risks BTW, and I think  that I might have discovered another one by accident because some of the presets have been replaced by the ones that I've programmed in the corresponding User bank. For example, patch number 079 has been copied to location 579 on my OB6, and effectively replaced the original preset there, whilst I pressed the wrong button combination (which I can't remember now). So I assume that there's a "secret" button combination to copy all user banks to all preset banks ?

Much like the hidden "Debug Menu" of the REV2 which also offers that possibility "Copy U to F" or "Copy F to U".

Some of the key combinations differ from the keyboard version to the desktop version.  (At least they do, on the sister device OB-6).  For example, you stated hold + portamento + 3 for checking internal temps.  That’s the same on the OB-6 desktop version.  On the keyboard version, it is transpose + 3

I don’t think any of these are ‘secrets’ per se..

If you stumbled onto some hidden way of overwriting the permanent banks 5-9 . . . that is indeed miraculous, as it is likely non-volatile ROM memory.  Maybe not?  Have you powered off, and back on - your Prophet?  Is the change still there??

Yes they are still there. I think that, as on all DSI synths, the presets are stored in flash ram, but only the software prevents them from being overwritten.

Trying to find that combination again (which I did), I've also discovered that on the Desktop version, holding down "Hold+Portamento+9" copies the presets banks 500-999 to the User banks 000-499.
Again on the desktop version, holding down "Hold+Portamento+0" copies the User banks 000-499 to Presets banks 500-599.

I really wish that those functions would be listed in the manual, or that someone from DSI would have told us about them.

Same thing with the "Debug Menu" on the Prophet REV2, it's actually DSI support that told a user who was having problems with his REV2 to access that hidden menu by a "secret" button combination. That menu offers the possibility of overwriting the presets as well.

NOTE: the combination to clear the temperature tables is not Manual+3 (as I erroneously wrote in my first post in this thread), but rather holding down "Hold+Portamento+4" on the desktop version.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISKS, since this will clear all tuning reference data and you will have to rebuild those tables by holding down "Manual+0" many times in the following days and weeks at different times and room temperatures in order to build it back up again. You have been warned.

I think on the desktop OB6 it is still manual + 3 for clearing tuning tables......I accidentally did it a while back and something happened....now you make me wonder what I did....

You did, clear the tuning tables John01W.  [Manual]+3 on the desktop unit resets that..  Time to do some re-building!  ( [MANUAL] + 0 ) periodically.

A couple of other shortcuts...

Check Internal Temperature of the OB-6
   [TRANSPOSE] + 3
Desktop module?
        [HOLD] +  [PORTAMENTO]  + 3

Thanks Jdoo!  I rebuilt them quickly after, but my music space stays pretty temp regulated.

Using:  [HOLD] +  [PORTAMENTO]  + 3....I'm guessing it displays the temperature in celsius

My OB6 desktop starts cold at:

20 degrees Celsius(68 degrees Fahrenheit)
but after being on for a while steadied at being:

43 degrees Celsius(109 degrees Fahrenheit)

That's not excessive is it?

About the same here. The highest it went was 48 degrees Celsius with a room temperature of 30 degrees Celsius.
I guess it's normal in order to get that analog sound warmth ? lol

LOL, cool :D, thanks Alain...  First time doing this function so I was wondering, appreciate it!

Both of these work on my OB-6 w/Keyboard. On the Transpose, you need to press and hold both buttons.

John01W,

Tried this temperature measurement- Neat to know this trick.  Mine starts to steady out at 30C (internal temp) which depending on my basement temperature, which can get cool in winter, takes only a few minutes.

This would seem to go back to what I was saying quite some time ago,  the OB6 (or at least mine) warms up.  This is not an issue imo, just an observation.  I could be all wrong, but I have a theory on this.  I have accumulated lot of calibration points,  but I never ran any of my cal points immediately after switching on the instrument.  Therefore, if trying to play immediately after switching on, the instrument is still cool and is in a mode of steep gradient temperature climb (but at points  well below the calibration curve).  I'd suspect users with a lesser temperature range would notice much less initial gradient.

This is correct regarding calibration and temperature.

Sooo I took a longish vacation and when I came back I was a little fuzzy on the temp reading shortcut and erroneously tried hold+portamento+0, thusly overwriting banks 500-999 with 0-499 (i believe?). Is there a way to reverse this i.e. return 500-999 to the stock patches without tampering with my custom patches in the 000-499 banks?

One way that I could see would be to save your current User banks (0-499) to a .syx file (by selecting Globals Menu 2, Pgm Dump, and USR), then reload the Factory programs banks in the User area (overwriting the patches there). Then press hold+portamento+0 to copy them into the Factory banks (500-999), and then finally reload your previously saved User banks to (0-499) thus getting your OB6 back the way it was before the mishap.

Unless someone from DSI, uh I mean Sequential has a quicker and less convoluted way of doing that perhaps ?

This sounds very sensical, even if it is a bit of a long process, thanks. Will try this today

Another useful 'secret' button combo I've come across is turning the unit on while pressing 'hold'. This boots the unit into test mode where the values of any knob you turn will be displayed numerically on the bank readout. This is useful if you suspect you have a faulty potentiometer or have some parameter acting strangely in a way that warrants investigation.

Would there be any risk associated in just running the Synth in this mode?

Coming from a REV2, I find having the values displayed is very useful. The ability to do this on the OB/P6 without running an editor would be most helpful.
