Title: PolyEvolver quirks.
Post by: ReubenJones on December 06, 2017, 03:15:24 PM
Hi all, this is my first post, and unfortunately it's me complaining.

The oscillators on the right channels of my PEK and PER don't sustain when the left channel oscillator levels are turned off.
They only sustain if the left channel oscillators are on at least level 17; any lower and they cut out. This seem like a really odd quirk; why should the right channel oscillators be dependant on the left? It happens for both analogue and digital oscillators.

Another quirk of my PEK - aftertouch always seems to be set to filter cuttoff, even if all mod sources and destinations are turned off. I have to go into the SoundTower editor to reset it.

What quirks do your PolyEvolvers have?

The only quirk/bug my Poly Evolver Keyboard has is one in which, when you first touch the LFO Amount, it jumps to 100.  That's a tad too much vibrato for my taste!

Regarding your first issue, what happens when you hold down an oscillator button?  Does that oscillator solo, as it's supposed to, and can it be heard when the levels of the others are turned down?

Have you tried to calibrate the oscillators and filters? your symptoms seems to point in that direction.

Sacred Synthesis, when I solo the right channel I still have the same problem. Not so with the left channel.

Razmo, I haven't tried that. I'll give it a go, thanks for the suggestion.

Where can I find how to calibrate the oscillators? I can only find the wheel calibration routine.

Whilst I'm here; ever since I upgraded to potentiometers, pressing an oscillator button resets the screen to oscillator frequency, whereas before it would stay on the oscillator parameter that was last changed and display that parameter for the newly selected oscillator. For example if I was changing level of OSC 1 and I wanted to see at what level OSC 2 was, I would press OSC 2 and the screen would tell me OSC 2's level, but now it resets to OSC 2 frequency. Is there a way to choose the behaviour of the buttons and the information on the screen?

It's in the manual at "hidden functions"... press and hold RESET switch, and then oscillator 2 switch... I'm not sure though if this is for the PE, PER or PEK... but it should be in the manual of your type of Evolver :)

Also make sure you don't have the distortion on, because the noise gate is only triggered by the left oscillators. So if you are using distortion at low levels to add some texture, you can be in a situation where those left oscillators aren't opening the noise gate or are allowing it to close prematurely.

Definitely have not experienced that, or anything similar. Sounds like a default patch has that set up or some kind of data is loading behind the scenes. Are you always working with the editor?

"What quirks do your PolyEvolvers have?"

Just the bugs that they all have -- the sequencer triggering/advancing is only triggered by the first voice.
