Title: Prophet 12 digital sound examples?
Post by: LoboLives on November 15, 2017, 04:27:22 AM
Hey guys can anyone show me some examples of the Prophet 12 doing more classic digital type sounds. I've heard a lot of demos with the Prophet 12 doing more analog sounding patches. I'm trying to hear some DX7 type sounds, wavetable sounds, FM bass, bells, tines, digital choirs,  wavetable modulation etc.

I heard a few examples in the DSI video with John Chowning but I'd like to hear some more extensive examples and compare them to those type of sounds in the Nord Lead 4.  Can anyone help?

I just got here from posting 7 videos featuring non analogue sounds. The videos are for a music lesson so you can skip the verbal explanations at the beginning (they are all quite short videos).

Here are some demo, one using many wavetables, one using the linear FM :)

Man some of those sounds are wild on the Linear FM track. Love the tone at the 34 second mark. Reminds me a bit of cello strings.

Man I really wish there were more examples. Was considering The P12 or a Nord Lead 4 for those digital sounds but I can't really find any extensive examples of those tones for either synth.

If you're considering the keyboard version, put your hands on the Nord Lead 4 before you buy one. The keyed of the NL4 feels "toyish".  The P12 has a much nicer keyboard in my opinion.

The cello sound is actually a preset given with the bank given with the OS update adding the linear FM.

Warning, some of the sounds can give you a mullet haircut  ;D

The NL4 was a competitor of the P12 when I bought mine, but I prefered adding extra money for the P12, and I wonder why Nord had the bloody stupid idea not to include a chorus in the FX section.

Well to be fair the Prophet 12 only has delay as an effect.

Not trying to overstate the P12 effects, but in addition to delay, I can get quite usable reverb, chorus and flanging out of it. And then the P12 Character section also qualifies as effects in my opinion. And of course, it has distortion too.

By modulating a delay line by a LFO, you can turn it into a chorus, a phaser, a flanger, a reverb...

I've even managed to program a ensemble chorus and it gave me fantastic string sounds

I didn't want to divert any of my P12 delay's to chorus/phaser/flanger/reverb so picked up a TC Electronics M350 for a couple hundred bucks  ;)

Have to agree with you Wytch Crypt.  I rather just use an outboard effects if I need the traditional chorus, flanger than fiddle with creating my own.  Though it's neat to understand how it can be done.

I caught a TC Electronic M-One at a good price when I bought my own P12, particulary for the reverbs  :)

The Eventide H9 also makes a good pairing with the P12.

Eventide and synths in general are the perfect combination.

Whatever external processor works is great!  Is it cool that you can create these same effects from the P12 delays?  Absolutely.  Would I rather have those 4 delays ready and waiting to modulate, mangle and create chaos in a P12 patch?  You betcha  ;)

No doubt.   My usual response is "the best Eventide box you can afford", but in reality,  the H9 is the best bang for your buck.

I remember asking awhile ago about effects to pair with the p12 and you or someone else must have said "the best Eventide box you could afford." I went with the H9 and have been in sonic paradise ever since.

That was me.  It seems like I say that about once a month on this forum.   :)
Glad the advise turned out to be helpful.

You know with the onboard effects of my P6 and built in Lexicon effects on my Soundcraft I'm always sort of iffy on getting another effects box. Was thinking about the Eclipse Rack.

Those are excellent sounding units. I sold mine to fund an H7600, but otherwise it was a keeper.
They were reasonably priced last time I looked on Reverb...

It's better to use external effects for reverb because the one you can create with the P12 often sounds metallic.

But for the chorus, very few effects units have an ensemble one, Nord wasn't crazy not featuring a chorus in the NL4 (they could have, the Nord Wave had a good one) and a fantastic chorus ensemble on the A1.

I also recently bought a Strymon Big Sky on tried it on the P12 and it was a pure trip  ;D

Strymon Big Sky and Prophet 12 is a match made in heaven... I landed on a long reverb which just sounds so good I have never been able to take the pedal off the Pro12 after that...

I was wandering about the Nord A1... Im getting a decent deal on one... how good is it? Where would u rate it compared to a Prophet 12? Is it toyish at all by any chance? I always loved the Nord sound, pretty keen on getting it but its not really cheap and still a little bit of an investment so I need to be sure.

The A1 sounds fine, but you should play one before you buy it. The keyboard feels cheap to me. I know others may disagree and that's fine, but the feel of the keys was such a turn off that I really stopped considering it.

I sold a Nord 2X to buy a P12 and it was a piece of cake to reprogram most of the sounds.

The NL4 was a competitor but I preferred adding extra money to buy the P'12 (prefered a 5 octave Kb with aftertouch and a killer modulation matrix).

The A1 is more limited, so...

And a far superior key bed.....

thanks for the inputs guys, yeah for sure it makes sense to check out one if I get the chance before attempting to buy it

Maybe a desktop version may be more interesting

yeah I was thinking exactly the same... if the keybed is not great and a desktop version is available (which is) then why not get that instead and save some money and space
