Title: Collaborative Tempest Album
Post by: LucidSFX on September 07, 2017, 07:47:10 AM
Who wants to put a collaborative album together? I used to subscribe to Tom Cosm back when we first came up with Cosmic Core. I think it would be rad to do the same featuring the Tempest. The album will showcase one track per artist. We can setup some rules to ensure that the Tempest is either 100% on the song or at least 50%. It would be awesome if one of us could master the tracks (has the skill not just the plugins *grin*). We will also have to set a date for final submission.

Looking for interest right now...if you are interested please post here;)

I can't say for sure that I'd have the time, but I do like the idea; especially if the challenge is to make the tracks using the Tempest as the ONLY sound source.  Otherwise, I'm less interested.  It just depends on whether the deadline works with my tour schedule... Keep me posted, Lucid.

Cheers!

Will do. If we delay the timeline too much it may be a problem but I am thinking a Christmas Release party is more than adequate. Even if someone has an existing track which is good. I like the challenge of putting a track together. Once we have enough interested people, we will have to get organised. I think, if we can pull this together and push for a proper publication 2nd review of the Tempest we even have a chance to have our music heard by a larger audience. Fame and Glory aside...making music is what we do. A little structure may even make us better musicians...GASP!

I can give it a shot, i'm like as amateur as they come but hey ok, i like the idea coz i really like my Tempest haha xD

Will we multitrack or will it all be one sequenced iive track, can we use external midi etc? What are the conditions of entry @LucidSFX?

Title: Re: Collaborative Tempest Album
Post by: LucidSFX on September 09, 2017, 01:37:55 PM
I need some volunteers with mastering experience and graphic design. External processing is fine. Using the box standalone or sequenced from DAW are both acceptable. The key is that the Tempest alone is the sole sound generating source. There aren't many tracks out there without processing of some sort and the goal of this is to polish this to show the best possible use for the Tempest. However, if you choose not to use FX that is fine. I generally don't and prefer the raw sound. However, different genre's demand fx.

Any external FX and mixing or is it a straight one shot performance from the Tempest? Id love to try and contribute something if i can get something done in the next few days!
Title: Re: Collaborative Tempest Album

Great to have on board!

External processing is allowed so long as the Tempest is the sound source. You can either use the onboard sequencing or sequence from DAW in any manner.

Hey Boze, I think the September 17 deadline was just about committing to the collaboration, not about actually having a track done and submitted by then, but I could be wrong.  I think Lucid was aiming for December as a recording deadline... Anyway, I hope I'm right about that, because there's no way I can get to this in short order (sheepish grin).

Oh, and hey, is anyone apposed to the idea of adding a vocal to the track, as long as the Tempest remains the only instrumentation?  I'm down with it either way, but should a lyric reveal itself... (grin).

Cheers!

Title: Re: Collaborative Tempest Album
Post by: LucidSFX on September 13, 2017, 12:59:06 PM
Ha! If that was the case all you'd get from me is a groovey loop....I want us all to have enough time to piece something polished but not too much time. Setting a submission date (TBA) will force us all to complete a project for better for worse. I find that lack of a deadline puts me in a space where I would work on a track for a year and still not accomplish anything better. I am currently stuck ...but the pressure to move on is keeping me going on my new track.

I am looking forward to see how everyone uses the Tempest;)

I'm down.

I'd suggest a longer deadline for the release though. December is very very soon when you (or someone) has to collect all the tracks, get them mastered, set up the bandcamp page (or whatever you intend to do with it).

Maybe have tracks submitted by December and don't even mention a finished 'release' date until you have them all sent off to mastering.

Great idea!

Hey Lucid,

I don't want to put you out, so I think I'm just going to gracefully bow out of this collaborative before it gets any further along.  I thought it was something that was going to be orchestrated here on the forum, which I'm in the habit of checking on a semi-regular basis, but I'm not interested in joining Facebook, and I barely have the time anyway, so...

It seems you've garnered enough interest regardless (wink).

It's a fine idea though, and I look forward to hearing what y'all come up with when it comes to fruition.  At any rate, I'm on Vancouver Island a couple times a year for gigs, so maybe I'll run into you out there on the road, eh!

Cheers!

Hahaha - I think we should merge the two threads and use your previous post as the album title.

'WHY GOD, WHY?' seems quite an appropriate title for a Tempest LP (especially for those of us who've been Tempest users since way back).

I think my track is pretty much done. Listen to it here (https://soundcloud.com/red-meat-records/swamp-bastard).

Quite a challenge for me as really I'm used to using the Tempest in a more standard verse/chorus 'song' type manner. Don't really work on much purely electronic or instrumental material. Don't ask me what genre this is!

It's something I want to do more of though - need to start working in a less structured, more improvisational way.

Any feedback appreciated.

Nice tracks guys! Muleskinner, I really enjoyed hearing the static-y percussion in your track, it reminded me of the sounds I gravitate towards in my Tempest. I thought the whole piece was very suited to a race car video game or something :)

Monocon, your drums and synth sounds were both way different styles than I get out of my machine, which is really cool (there's so much sound buried in that machine)! I especially liked the formant style leads you had going on.

My track is mostly done - I'll be performing it in my set for my February shows, so that will help finalize the sequence etc (it always does!), and then I just have my vocals to record and edit (I always do that last).

I sold my Tempest last week. I know. Tought call, but I needed to get a Macbook Pro. I found it a joy to play, though a struggle sometimes to sound like I wanted and control! It rarely ended up in my tracks too. I reckon I will buy it again on day though.

Anyway, I had got around half way through my collab track, and I had recorded out a few live jams with my ideas so I do plan to finish it this month.

Looking forward to hearing the rest, great tracks already! Nice stuff.

Jeeezzz.....I saw your post before but couldn't respond. i got locked out and the email reminder for my password wasn't being sent. Obviously it finally did. The whole project fell flat. I got majorly tied-up with work. Others weren't quite vocal within the group except for a couple. The idea is still solid but man I have zero time to commit.  So much so, my Tempest and gear are collecting dust and it sucks to see them idle.  I may revisit this again when I finally get a studio desk. Which has been another pain in the ass. Mixing off my couch is BALLS. I also need to treat my "studio"...ahem living room. Condo living is BALLS too. *grin* Anyway, was a nice effort. My track actually got mostly finished. I realised that I missed recording a pass of one of the voices.  I also rather record each sound independently through voice out...which is BALLS (Notice a trend??) when you have a complicated pattern. Meaning, sometimes thanks to the Voice allocation AI the pattern sounds solid because it is dynamically switching sounds BUT if your sounds aren't programmed tight and you record out then the feel and sometimes sound of the pattern blows. I also can't sing worth a lick and this song requires vocals. Whatever, I am still dreaming of programming tracks and will do so once my work load has dropped off.

I finished my "Tempest only" track a while back, but it's sitting in mastering purgatory until a few other tracks are finished for my next EP release. I'll share the track here when it's out :). Thanks to this thread/idea for the kick in the pants to get that track made though - it was a built around a simple loop I had made years ago when I first got my Tempest and still had saved "for future use".  :)

I finished my track - think I posted a link to it back a bit.

Needs a bit of polishing up but, should this ever get off the ground again, it's there!

I know how difficult it it to get this stuff finished. The last 10% and saying it's 'done' is always the hardest. I'm also pretty burnt out at the moment with work and other projects like my old-time/bluegrass band (not much call for the Tempest in that one as you might imagine)!

Ever since 2018 came I have been hell of a lot busy. I haven't touched my Tempest in a few months (or any of my gear for that matter). I need a proper desk to work on instead of my couch. I also had been creating with headphones. Which sucks because they were DJ headphones...so then I bought studio headphones which are awesome but still suck when listening on proper monitors. So for the time being this project is on hold. I have to re-record my song I wrote and throw on some lyrics. We shall see.

I released my new 'Tempest only' single today (yes on legalization day here in Canada ;)), check it: https://soundcloud.com/textureandlight/nmst

All sounds on this track (besides my vocals) were synthesized, sequenced, and performed on my Tempest :)
