Title: Can the Prophet 12 do Prophet VS?
Post by: LoboLives on April 20, 2017, 04:07:33 AM
I've heard mixed things in regards to this. I'm a big fan of the Prophet VS and while I've heard the Prophet 12 can do many things on it's digital side I haven't heard that it can cover the Prophet VS waves. There was a comparison between the John Bowen Solaris and this and most people said that the Solaris has more of the VS waves in it (and much more) than the P12. I've never been hugely interested in the P12 until recently and honestly I would only use it to cover my needs for FM/VS type sounds. Can anyone provide any examples of the P12 doing PVS type sounds?

Not easy to say because the Poly Evolver had the Prophet VS wavetables and the Prophet 12 has 12 wavetables you can mix

Yeah I know the Poly Evolver has been sadly 4 voice polyphony won't cut it for me trying to emulate a VS patch.

The ability to smoothly transition between three different waveforms per oscillator is a big plus, compared to the VS, though there will be some sounds that one cannot duplicate exactly.

For me, having worked on a VS in the not-so-distant past (for repair purposes), I'd be more inclined toward a Prophet-12–or an Ensoniq ESQ-1/SQ-80, which (to me anyway) seem eminently more serviceable.

I've already got a Pro-2, the paraphony of which forces me to make some interesting decisions in terms of constraints–in fact, that might very well be the mark of a good instrument (i.e., it doesn't let one do everything, but it allows you to do quite a bit).

I'm interested in the P12 strictly for the digital waveforms and FM capabilities ironically. However I haven't heard many people demo any DX type sounds or VS type sounds with it. I'm a big John Carpenter fan and Alan Howarth who did the synth programming always preferred the VS over the DX7 and used it on a lot of the later Carpenter tracks for the rhodes and clav sounds as oriental sounds on Big Trouble In Little China. So I'm after it for those reasons.

Is it just me, or does the Prophet VS sound a thousand times better than the Prophet 12?  The P12 seems to be in a league of its own, sounding nothing like a VS or Poly Evolver.

There are only four 12-bit DAC channels used for all eight voices (multiplexed) on the VS, with the output of each oscillator summed into the filter input–compare this to the Prophet-12, where each voice has its own DAC channel but the mixing of the oscillators is handled in the digital domain.

It's apples to pomegranates, really...and that's before you get to the VS' analogue chorus.

The DX7 used sine waves and linear FM, which a quite recent feature on the P'12 (OS 1.3)

I know it's a recent feature I just haven't heard any examples.

There were some DX7 type sounds on the New factory presets. I am exploring new FM voices that are more sophisticated than those possible with the DX7 (I wrote 256 original DX7 voices in the last century) by using more complex waves to build my new FM voices. I believe other people here are slowly building up a range of more traditional FM sounds.
