Title: Tempest Sound Design & Patch Exchange
Post by: Yorgos Arabatzis on September 26, 2015, 07:41:47 AM
First topic for me on the official new exciting DSI forum.Looking forward for some good & constructive times!
Thought i look ahead and create a sticky thread that any Tempest or other user can share their sound design secrets and upload their hot new patches! As a long time member on the unofficial DSI forum i gathered patches from various users thoughout the years that many of you will find very useful! In fact many of these patches were lost in the black hole called "Old Forum Crash"...So at the end of this post i've attached my first contribution to this community  ;)
Also i'll try to keep all things organised to the first post for everyone's convenience..
Many thanks and much respect to all the contributors!

Sound Design Tips & Tricks from the Unofficial Forum

   •   If you would like a medium/long decay for the analog oscillators and only a quick click from the digital ones then set the main amp envelope decay to medium/long and set aux envelope 1 or 2 to OSC 3 or 4 level and set the decay to short.

   •   To achieve a 'wavetable sweep' type of sound: Turn OSC 2, 3, 4 off. Turn OSC Sync on. Use the OSC1 frequency to change the timber of the oscillator. OSC 2 continues to keep OSC1 in sync even when off.

   •   set up the aux envs as additional vca's, give them different delays, set the amount to zero and modulate the amount with (random) lfos...
instant glitchyness, works especially well with on short sounds (obviously...)
extra fun can be had if you also modulate all the decays.

   •   If you want to use an Aux envelope to control the Level of OSC 3 or 4, turn down the level of the OSC first, then use the Aux envelope to control it directly since it adds to the level parameter.

   •   Remember that with 4 osc, you can create a chord with one voice by tuning each osc to a different pitch.

   •   Trick for claps:
Use aux 1 & 2 envelopes on the VCA with short decays (also have a short decay on the main AMP envelope)
Set the 'Delay' parameter on Aux 1 Envelope to about 6-8, and to about 12-16 on Aux 2. That gives the illusion of multiple 'slightly offset' claps occurring a few ms apart. Sounds very 'clappy'.

   •   Using an LFO routed to the pan of a sound at a high rate (120+) to create a cool stereo widening effect. It can be extreme or soft. It's also fun to use an envelope routed to the amount for the LFO to create animated widening.

   •   Not a 303, but still funky - Set synth voice to mono (assign to a voice). Write a cool sequence with a short decay/percussive sound. Go into the step edit mode and stick in extra notes, set to reverse. They'll slide into the next note but immediately be cut off by it when the next note triggers.

   •   Nutty roll-your-own arpeggiator - Mix two square LFO's at different rates and different amounts to osc. all pitch. Now experiment with rates that are subdivisions of your master tempo - like set one to 16th note sync and the other to quarter note, etc. and tune them using amount for traditional arpeggiator/analog sequencer behavior. Hot! But if you really wanna get ignorant on it, go into your mod paths and start routing those same LFO's to other parameters - you have 8 "cables" to work with. You'll get living, breathing sequences with all sorts of stuff changing in sync, and it sounds awesome. Congratulations, you just joined Tangerine Dream - now go make love on a real train. Also try routing your slider positions to LFO amount, one for each LFO - suddenly you've got a pitch-playable arpeggiator!

   • 1.set oscillator 3 and 4 to have two different samples. for example one closed hat, one open.
           2. Set the oscillator 3 level to max and osc 4 to off.
           3. Set Amp Env amount to max.
           4. in the mod matrix assign one slot as velocity -> 127 -> osc 4 level.
           5. assign another mod slot as velocity -> -127 -> osc 3 level.
Play the sound's pad in 16 levels mode. Hitting pad 1 (min velocity) will play only oscillator 3, hitting pad 16 (max velocity) will play only oscillator 4. You can now play two distinct samples from a single pad using a single voice. You can have a variation of this by using the arp and having LFO's control the split between Osc 3 and Osc 4.

   •   If you have a hat sound with a long attack and long decay change both of your LFO settings to Lowpass and alternate the rates (I have mine set at 44 and 78 respectively).
Now go into Mute mode and with a beat playing over top turn your hi hats off (make sure you have something programmed before turning it off).
You now have that nice "white noise swoosh" sound that you hear on so many tracks!

--------------------------------

Sound Design Tips & Tricks from the Official Forum

   •   Tempest gives you a "delay" parameter for each of your envelopes (and such deep mod assignment options), you can make your long, drawn out pad sounds more interesting by triggering your assignable envelopes at different times.  And when you combine this with with the 8 slots in the mod matrix, you can have each of those delayed envelopes trigger several different parameters and those parameters can affect other parameters and so on.  Have your LFO amount or rate go random midway through the patch, have the LFO start modulating completely different parameters halfway through, etc.

   •   Fake a 'per sound' compressor by setting one of the aux envs to modify VCA level by a negative amount. Can sound pretty cool! Use the mod matrix to change the compressor curve by modulating the env by itself.

   •   To make a sound go on forever at the same volume (Drones) until it's interrupted by voice steal or a choke do the following:
- Set the amp envelope how you would like, and set release to the max.
- use an aux envelope on destination amp env release with settings: decay 127, amount - 127, release 127
It will now go on forever until retriggered or interrupted. I use it on synth pads I set to 1 voice for instance. Make sure low pass envelope doesn't close the filter or apply the same routing to the filter to keep it steady at release (use mod matrix with same aux env).

hi, we're quite interested as well! do you think it's the kind of thing DSI would be into organizing or should we all as users, do it ourselves? personally, i'd like to set out and see how many drum machines we could emulate with it-

Ok, so I guess this is probably just common sense, but could be easy to overlook, I suppose.  But being that the Tempest gives you a "delay" parameter for each of your envelopes (and such deep mod assignment options), you can make your long, drawn out pad sounds more interesting by triggering your assignable envelopes at different times.

I really try to look at the mod matrix as a painter's palette when designing pad sounds.  Just think of some kind of movement you want in your patch and the Tempest gives you plenty of freedom to paint just about any little nuance you can think of.  God, I love this machine so much.  :)

A little while ago, I spent some time analyzing my TR-606 and DR-110, and made an effort to emulate their sounds. I put the results online (http://bitrotten.com/tempest/) and included a few other sounds I was working on at the time. I think it's a nice set of analog kicks, snares, and handclaps - hope you do too.

I've done a few 'Jazz' searches without much luck. I'm quite new to the Tempest. But I'm making progress with redesigning, or individualising presets. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any Jazz drum sysex, available for download? So far I've been experimenting with standard house drum sounds. Jazz I think will be a little more difficult. Although I've heard this guy's work was created from modified DSi sounds: https://soundcloud.com/wo-roughtests/juzzbeat1-4
I find the DSi patches uninspiring, as with my Prophet 06. But when you get under the hood you can make done incredible sounds that show off the DSi prowess! Having a set of Jazz drum sounds would be great if anyone has any. Thanks.  8)

Of the factory projects available, there are two or three that contain some pretty good renditions of acoustic drum-sets.  Go to the Tempest page on the Dave Smith Instruments site and download "Tight Kit", "Straight Kit", and "Funk Kit" from the 'Sounds' page (if you haven't already tried them).  One or all of those might make for a good place to start.

Hi,

I downloaded the 'Various Tempest Patches.zip' file but the transfer of these sysex sounds doesn't appear to work with OS 1.4. I'm new to the Tempest and might miss something.  :(

Currently using MIDI-OX under PC with USB cable and managed to load the new factory sounds without any problem.

The Tempest screen stays blocked on "Receiving sound file" and once the transfer is finished in MIDI-OX, the Tempest screens remains with the same message and no key does respond. So, I have to switch off my Tempest.

Any idea how I could get these transferred to the Tempest under OS 1.4 ?

By the way, thanks for your contribution.

Thanks for your feedback.

Looks like it's not a MIDI-OX problem as the new sound files did transfer correctly.

Maybe I miss something in the settings of the Tempest or MIDI-OX for this transfer. Should the Tempest be in a certain mode before receiving files from previous OS versions ?

If someone can help, it would be great.

Volume trickery:

Since osc 1&2 use a mix knob, rather than a dedicated volume knob, workarounds are needed. Using only 1 of the 2 analog oscs is a well known option, but you lose one osc. I came up with another solution, it's not useful for every sound, but it is useful :)

- when using a pulse wave on osc 2 (so you can use osc one for fm), @ 0% there is no sound. So there ya go... Set it at 0%
- Now use an Aux envelope to set the pulse wave above 0% by increasing decay and amount.
- also use the mod matrix to modulate the decay of the Aux with the Aux itself. You can create punchy clicks this way for your resonant noise based hihats and rides without losing the noise tail by needing the amp env, and being able to use both digital oscs.

To use the pulse width method like an on/off switch use one of the LFO's via mod paths:
- set pulse wave above 0%, 50% for instance.
- in mod paths set LFO 1 to control pulse width of osc 2 by a negative amount, -127 for instance
- Set the LFO to square and a rate slow enough so it doesn't start a new cycle.

Not exactly a volume knob, but at least an extra on/off switch method ;)

Hi guys, when im designing sometimes i get a clip/click at the start of my sound even if i adjust the attack it remains, im sure i read a tip of how to remove this (although i know its kind of desirable also) I'd like some really clean sounds without it if possible trying to emulate simmons style!

Is there a pro tip for this or is it just Tempest character??

What is everyones absolute favourite sound design feature they love the most about the Tempest??

Mines using velocity to change the amp+filter envelope amounts via the mod screen! It gives some of the best sounding snare rolls i ever created!!! (thanks to Stims guide for that one!!). What are other peoples fav feature???

Not sure this qualifies as sound design, more like limits pushing. I really enjoy using the FX1-4 slots to squeeze more than should be possible out of one voice.

For example, put a snare on oscillator 3, a hi-hat on oscillator 4, and use oscillator 1's triangle wave to make a kick with envelope > osc 1 pitch. Then set the osc levels to 0 and use FX1-3 on the sequencer to control the level of the oscillators to "trigger" each sound, allowing for a beat on one voice and the rest free for synth duties.

Only problem is it's fairly easy to hit the 8 event per step limit doing this.

I'd have fun doing a "one voice challenge" kind of like Elektron's Science Lab...... If you could modulate the oscillator 3/4 waveforms, it would be even more fun!

Doesn't modulating the pulsewidth count? You can modulate that at least for some waveform variation! I'll defo have to give this a try tommorow lol getting the most out of one voice like that is a hella neat idea tbh!!! Nice one!!!

Something I've been doing a lot is using the Mod Matrix to extend the range of controls.  For example, if you set your LPF key tracking to 65 and turn the cutoff knob all the way down it only goes so low frequency-wise.  You can use an Aux Envelope with a long peak time (for short drum sounds) or an ADSR with 0 attack/decay and full sustain, route that to the LP Filter Cutoff, and you can lower the filter frequency even further.

I also use this trick to push the digital oscillators past the -24/+24 limit, and fine-tune the filter frequency when creating self resonating kicks.  To do that I need to be in ADSR mode, then assign the Aux Env to LP Filter Cutoff with an amount of 1 or 2.  The Sustain of the ADSR then acts as a fine-tuner.

Drop some examples man i'd love to hear!!

Wow that sounds awesome man, i'd love to hear or even play some of these resonant kicks man, i have a soundpatch called Tiegkick that is so well done i think its my favourite kick, i didn't make it i got it from the sound syx files on page 1 of this thread, whoever made that is a flubin genius tho its got some serious bite hahah!

Drop some examples man i'd love to hear!!

Maybe eventually? I've had the Tempest for a week so I've just been making my own presets and exploring the sound design possibilities, once I get enough sounds I like I'll probably upload them.  I'm working on some video tutorials on how to emulate an 808 kick/snare that I hope to get out soon though.

Hi guys, I've been really getting deeper into the sound design of the Tempest, i never had a synth quite like this before, so its been a learning curve and still is, but today I made a snare sound i'm really quite proud of!!!

I'll share it with you guys, let me know what you think!!!

I'm getting some really nice interesting FM sounds that are self oscillating and rise by themself by using varying amounts of highpass and feedback. I'm getting some amazing sci-fi sounds like a UFO taking off.

The filter rises over time but i'm not sure exactly why it does this on its own?

So the patch at the moment is like this-

OS1 PUL 91%
OSC2 OFF
0/100

LP 71
RES 64
AUDIO MOD 61

HP 17

Feedback
Vol 127
FB 95

Put into ADSR and crank the AMP release up to max to hear the effect then start to tweak for some crazy tones!!!!

Try C0 and C1 espescially for those pyscdellic tripped out space sounds!!!

Try the same OSC settings and

LP 92
RES 88
AUDIO MOD 61
HP 33

FVOL 127
FB 109

and C1 for a great UFO takeoff!!!

Heres a bass I made thats kind of got a nice house feel!

Give it a little distortion around the 1/4 turn (9oclock) area and set a LP filter on a slider for some really great live tweaks!!

Let me know what you think!

Ok so after a year of having the Tempest and getting to know it pretty well I have one great tip that i use ALL the time to liven up, well, nearly all my drums especially hats and things that are played on 16ths and 8ths, it may be obvious but here it is!!!

sync one of the LFO's and set to note, and then assign the random lfo and clock it to quaters , 8ths, 16ths or 32ths depending on the sounds and its frequency usualy 8th or 16ths sounds best,

assign it to  the pitch or vca level or anything really but pitch is really good for humanisation, then slowly start to dial in the amount usually a pretty low amount of between like 5 to 30 will give you a really convincing groove to the sound.

This works on pretty much any drum sound but like i said, hats, snares and other frequent drums get a added awesomeness, tbh its one of my favourite things about the Tempest a really subtle but simple thing that i've not come across on other drum machines i've personally owned that works as well as this.

edit - and because you get 2 lfos you can make one do pitch and one volume and booom you got yourself a live drummer!

Sometimes (particularly when dealing with bass-heavy sounds that are assigned to a single voice) this is not due to the attack of the new sound but the old sound getting cut dead whilst the waveform of the previous note is too high in amplitude (not at a zero crossing).

The solution in this case is to adjust the release of the sound so that the old note dies out before the new one kicks in. It's common to all synths I've used, laws of physics!

Interesting point. Wave reset can also helps. Sometimes I also find that adjusting the filter envelope attack plus lowering the amount smooths out the click.

I find myself designing sounds unique to each project. For me the most common sounds tend to be the BD and Clap thanks to Yorgos and AdamX. I use sample sounds for HH. Using AdamX and Yorgos tutorials/sounds I created some stock variations but It seems easier to create a bass/lead patch that blends better with the common sounds than trying to adjust existing patches. It helps in creating a fresh beat with a signature vibe each time and doesnt take long to do.

Yes since originally writing that about click i find that slight attacks on the envelopes usually takes any click away and wave reset helps a little also.

I agree with lucid, i find myself using the samples more and more with the Tempest especially for hats although i do have some really nice noise based hats also, and BD usually I use the analog method then throw a sample or two underneath just to add some texture, claps is usually a hybrid too. Its nice to make some analog only sounds but i have to admit the Tempest sounds at its best when your using all available options with no prejudice as to whether its a sample or analog oscillator.

I've had the Tempest long enough now that sometimes i do desire some other drum sounds, but tbh its only really a carbon copy of an 909 hat and a more beefy kick drum i desire, otherwise the Tempest manages most flavours with relative ease especially when you start to layer sounds in the or whatever.

Hi all, I was going over the Bass Drum tips to see if there was anything I hadn't figured out yet, and I'm running into something which I can't understand why it's happening.  I'm following the instructions for the 909 type kick, and after setting up the first 2 or 3 steps I get the initial kick sound, but every 4th time I hit the pad the sound turns into more of a triangle synth/oscillator sound rather than the kick.  It happens consistently pretty much every 4th hit.  I've checked all other parameters and the mod matrix to make sure everything else is neutral or zeroed out.  Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Ok I figured out how to eliminate this.  I had to assign the kick drum pad to its own voice.

Thanks, Yorgos. I had read that, but I'm still not exactly sure if I understand why it does that, especially since the kick was the only pad I was playing and there were no other voices to interfere with it.  Does it have something to do with the triggering of the envelope?

Do you have it in AD or ADSR mode?

If its in ADSR the length of time you hold down the pad will influence the length of the kick, in AD mode the decay will be the same each hit. Also if you have any kicks programmed into the event (sequence) and you play over the top and its not assigned a voice it will play twice, this might be probable as teh soilution to this is to choke the pad with its own pad, it sounds like flam really if this is happening.

In the future if you're having problems with your Tempest please create a new post. This is a place where we share ideas & patches. If you read well the post i've sent you it explains pretty well how T's voices work. That behavior you've experienced was because of your T's voice architecture. You had a cable plugged into an individual  voice without assigning a sound to it..

Thanks for the info, RobH

Hey, would anyone be interested in designing two sets of drums for me?

I was hoping, and is a long stretch that you are willing to make a video tutorial of how you designed the sounds , and to also send me the patch so I can reverse engineer it and learn from it.

Because it's a pretty specific request , I am willing to financially compensate via email money transfer to anyone willing to take on the challenge , granted they feel confident they can get in the ball park of the drum sounds for the two songs

Also, a special request if they can emulate the bass sound for the synth portion of the first song .

The songs are

Drake - no tellin
Deadmau5 - professional griefers

Feel free to inbox me, I can give you my cell number or email address if you prefer to communicate outside the forum

Yorgos, or anyone from the old DSI phpBB forum,

The patch collection .zip links are broken these days to the ##Tempest Sound Design Competition pack## from 4 years ago.

Does anyone have either of these .syx zips they would repost?

Same sounds in each zip, but the first is carefully split in to multiple .syx files by sound category.

tsdc_final_categories.zip or TSDC_Final_ALL_414.syx

Rob, thanks for the reply. The Various Tempest Patches sets are killer. I didn't see the sound design comp banks in there though. Do you know if they were retitled?

I was finally able to load the old DSIforum page and download those banks. Attaching here in case anyone else has issues loading in the future.

I haven't given the community a patch in a while, this is a fairly simple patch but beutiful all the same, poly patch i posted a 3 note chord example on my soundcloud so you still have another 3 notes to play with to make the chord bigger or whatever put some drums or synth underneath.

In the example i manually change the lfo's to the VCA if you wondering how i'm achieving some of the sound, you'll have to also go in the LFO's and add some amount the VCA at the end of the example i swopped out the pan lfo i have in the patch i'll upload at the bottom to VCA duties as well (i mention this to stop confusion only). Also there is some slight verb on the example but heh its really not even adding much at all tbh.

Drum machine xD

So I updated the Tempests OS and everything else using Sysex Librarian but I cannot get any of the files here to upload. The file is sent and the Tempest says receiving but just hangs there even though the file says sent. Tried Electron C6 sysex editor but is the same. Tempest just sits there forever saying receiving.

Advice for other Tempest noobs like me.

Update Tempest OS etc to the latest firmware.
Format the flash drive so it is empty.
Calibrate pads
Calibrate oscillators

You can then start loading in sounds, beats or projects. When I got this Tempest it must have had quite a few owners and was chock full of really terrible beats and sounds and other weirdness.

I am now going through the .syx archive here and really enjoying some of the stuff on there. Just had my mind blown by an TR808 clone. Ironically the last owner sold this to me because he just spent £3000 on an original TR808. : /

i can understand that the admin have decided to close the forum, but it would be nice for the tempest community to have access to all these attached files sys ex , so we can profite of this archives that should be alway available

Hey all, digging around in the zip file and have discovered some awesome stuff, but one folder by “John The Savage” was particularly interesting. It was a set of beats that all used the same synth, which is a great simple Kraftwerky thing, playing in weird patterns on a single note.

Curious if these beats are supposed to be used some way in particular, like as an old school 16 step sequencer, or what the deal is!

Anyway, have a good one!
