A question goes probably to @PYM...
Are there any chances for "Vintage Knob" from P5rev4 for OB-6?
With OBs VCOs and Filter I suppose the synth will sound absolutely fantastic!
I'm absolutely ready to pay (a reasonable price) for this.

Absolutely yes...the same as states in my Prophet-6 feature request thread!!

something like 50$ / 50€ would be a reasonable price in my opinion

Installed the new update, this is an awesome feature! I do like the vintage at about 25%-30% on most patches ive tried, but holding a chord on a pad and turning vintage all the way up then down sounds pretty awesome! Granted once you shift chords you can tell how unstable it is, but definitely a fun tool to have added onto the OB6 for sure! Major props to the Sequential dev team!

How do I activate the new Vintage mode once I've installed the latest firmware?

Oh, I got it. Hold "bank" and then hit "globals". This is a 3rd page of globals. Press button "4". This is Vintage on/off. His the "select" button to toggle up to "on".
Sweet.

I just wanted to say, man, all at Sequential.....thank you so much for this update...I have yet to install this(will tonight)...but what you've done here I cannot thank you enough. Thanks SO MUCH!

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the "Slop" equivalent on the OB-6. Is it the global detune?
TIA

Correct; it's the Detune knob in the Misc. Parameters section.

I saw somebody ask at another forum and it made me wonder- after updating to the new OS, will I be able to choose whether to use the new vintage mode or the old detune mode? Does the vintage mode replace detune altogether? Does this update alter the sound of patches already saved that are using detune?
-
Thanks Sequential for this. Sounds a lot more like my vintage OB8 now! 👍😁

yes, there is a preference to choose existing or vintage

What a nice bonus! Thank you, Sequential! Now I love this synth even more than I already did. You guys are awesome.

Thanks! I was going to try thwacking the side of my OB6 to toggle it on/off with the accelerometer. Surely if I hit it hard enough the the character will change eventually 🤪

The new "Vintage" behavior is switchable. By default, it is off, which means that the original "detune" functionality is what you continue to hear. Should be no difference. But, at the same time, you don't get to use the new "Vintage" functionality because it's turned off.
If you turn on the "Vintage" functionality via the new Globals page, it applies to all patches, both new and old; "Vintage" behavior replaces "Detune" behavior. You can always go into the Globals menu to turn it off/on at will, but it is a global setting; it is not a per patch setting.

I'm not familiar with the Vintage mode of other Sequential synths, what exactly is different about it?
-
There is a thread about the new vintage mode at GearSlutz in the electronic music section titled Prophet-6 & OB-6 "Vintage Knob" Thread. (Sorry, couldn't get a link to work.)
Post #112 contains an audio file that demonstrates the difference. The vintage mode does sound beautiful, at least on that one patch.
P.S. Thanks everybody for the replies. I'm excited to load the new OS! Now I'm off to learn about MPE...
-
Nice Sequential. Happy New Year to all at Sequential. Especially Pym! Thanks for this update!

Thanks. I ended up getting a chance to install the update earlier than I was expecting, so I was able to pay with this first hand. Good stuff, subtle, but a nice addition.

Well I've been trying to update for three hours. I have the 1.6.4 OS on my desktop, the instructions printed out, I follow them precisely. I am using SysEx Librarian. The update seems to go well, the countdown finishes, the OB-6 turns off briefly then turns on again and... 1.5.5 is loaded.
I have one MIDI connection for my computer- Roland UM-One- so no other to try.
Any synth updates I've done before with this computer/SysEx Librarian/Roland, including updates for the OB-6, have been trouble free.
I'm defeated on this one. Luckily I already like the OB-6 as is.
-
1.6.4 Beta won't take no matter what I try. I've used 2 different usb midi dongles and the OB-6 USB all with varying speeds from 19%-100%. I get through the 999-0 but then immediately it reboots and remains 1.5.5. I'm on Catalina using SysEx Librarian. Any ideas?
EDIT:
Do we need to upgrade from the previous 1.5.8 Beta?
-
I'm having the same issues. I tried all transfer speeds as well, slower speeds just caused the whole thing to freeze up. I really need to give up on this, I've already blown the whole morning! If you find a solution, please post here.
Edit: We both use Macs. I wonder if anyone using a Mac has been successful updating?
Edit #2: If you're thinking of trying to use Sysex Base on iPad to do this update, don't. I just spent ten bucks to find out 1.6.4 won't "open in" Sysex Base for unknown reasons.
-
I updated from my Mac using Sysex Librarian. What MIDI interfaces are y'all using? Make sure your MIDI interface isn't filtering any Sysex.
-
With Sysex Lib / MacOS
I have 2 dongles that work fine with other gear.
iConnectivity mio 1-in 1-out
OIBTECH 1-in 1-out (generic amazon)
I'm currently trying with a forgotten Windows 10 boot on my MacBook Air and an old Midiman 1x1, using MidiOX but I'm having memory issues at the moment.

Which interface did you use and did you change any Sysex Lib settings?
-
I got this information from something a Sequential employee posted at GS:
"I would try updating to the synth via the bootloader. Hold WRITE while powering on. An animation will be shown on one of the screens indicating that bootloader is active. Send the OS to the synth via the MIDI IN port (USB cannot be used in bootloader mode)."
There's an extra light show near the end of the process when updating this way, so don't touch the synth for a minute or two after you reach 000 on the countdown.
And it worked!
Whew!
Now I can properly say thank you so much and happy new year to the Sequential team!
-
I'm using a mioXL connected to the OB-6 over USB MIDI and just letting it rip at full speed, did it in 1 go with no issues.
-
I set some low buffers over here with MIDIOX, I'm waiting for this countdown...if it fails, I'm trying the bootloader method.
Which interface did you use with the bootloader method?

Same here. Updated fine from my Mac. SysEx Librarian *did* freeze up after applying the update, but the update 'took' on my desktop OB-6.
Thank you DSI!

Macbook Pro, Catalina
Sysex Librarian
Tried:
-my regular Focusrite 8Pre (which have used to update my OB-6 before)
-craptastic Chinese made/ebay USB-MIDI device
-tried over pure USB
-tried USB to MIDI din
-tried MIDI din w/bootloader (as suggested by cbmd on Gearslutz)
-adjusted MIDI, USB MIDI, USB transfer speeds from 100% down to 20%
-redownloaded sysex file
-tried various combinations of settings
I've literally wasted half a day on this (about 16 times tried now). I wouldn't have bothered so much, but I am really happy about this update. The sound clips people are doing are incredible. I'm getting pretty bummed out right now. I don't have a PC to try (and really, I shouldn't have to).
btw, trying to upgrade from 1.5.5

I am still at the USB stage, slowing down the interface and adding 200ms for each block. With the P6 it went first trial, my OB-6 also never had a problem updating, until now. I will download the file again and then go down your list and go Midi if this doesn't work. I will report back.
For me, it is not a big deal, I am doing stuff next to it, like playing my P6!! :P
-
Nothing has worked for me yet, but using the bootloader has worked for a couple of people. Here is what was posted by Sequential on Gearslutz...I hope it will help you.

I had all of the issues upgrading from 1.5.5, I wonder if most folks had 1.5.8 installed or are also going from 1.5.5?
I did finally get it to work using the bootloader mode as found by pfrf (above).
Hold "Write" while powering on and then try once more.

Anyone have a breakdown on the "third row" of globals now? We know 4 is on/off for Vintage.
EDIT:
0: Master Pitchbend range from 1-96 semitones (default 2)
1: Voice Pitchbend range from 1-96 semitones (default 48)
2. Y-Axis Destination: Cutoff, PW1, PW2, PW12
3. Y-Axis Mode: Unipolar, Bipolar
4. Vintage On/Off

I used a Roland UM-One. Cheap plastic but it has been really solid for me. I got it to use with my iPad but I use it for everything now because it's just one simple cable.
-
I just updated directly from the USB connected to my MacBook Pro, no need for a MIDI interface.

After downloading a new file I tried at normal speed and nothing. I went straight for the boot loader method and voila. I am good to vintage now. Used a simple MIO single Midi interface (old faithful) and went with full speed in.
Let me know if you need further info, working from a MacBook and updated from 1.5.8

I did the update for my Prophet-6 and it worked the first time I tried. I'm trying to update my OB-6 now (same method, same gear) but it doesn't work. It counts from 999 to 1 but it stays on firmware 1.5.5. Very frustrating.....

Same thing here, P6 was a blast and the OB6 didn't want to update. Don't waste your time, go directly to the boot loader method.

Nevermind, I found it in the MPE Readme file.

Thanks, Sequential. My OB6 updated as hoped for, first time around, Sysex Lib and USB connection to a 5,1 MacPro.
Still trying to decide whether to use Vintage Mode. A lot of my patches already 'built in' some of that character.
Really enjoying the instrument. Thanks again.

some controllers offer a third axis of control (think poly AT but different). This says if your MPE controller does offer a third axis, to set it to CC74 (per voice). From there you can choose what you want to modulate. It's basically a polyphonic version of CC74 that's independent of polyphonic aftertouch

Made the update with MacOS via USB Midi using Sysex Librarian. No issue.
Made GLOBALS + WRITE
BUT
The synth was badly out of tune.
Made Globals + 0 but stucked at F22 for 3 Times
Reset the Temp Table with Globals + 3
Then the Temp calibration went OK
BUT
The synth is still out of tune in a weird way:
on the keyboard I play A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B
with oscillator at C0 (or C1) the OB6 plays something like
A1,A2,D,E,F,G,A,B
on C0 plays C0, on C1 plays A, on C4 plays C4
now it's late I have to turn it off, but there's something very wrong with tuning and I think it's related to the firmware update....

I wanted to put up a quick video demonstrating this awesome new feature.

I haven't installed this new OS yet, but I fail to see the point of the "vintage" knob on an OB6, because from the get-go, Tom Oberheim insisted on leaving some instability in the VCOs by design which can clearly be heard even with the detune knob all the way down. Everything else will just be more detuning.
On a Prophet 6, or Prophet REV2 I could understand the appeal of a vintage knob, but on an OB6, not that much I don't think. But I could be wrong. It's happened before! ;D

You realize its not just the frequency that becomes unstable with the "vintage mode"? It's instability in the envelopes, filter, frequency, everything really.
-
Thanks Sequential! It sounds awesome, glad that new functions are being added!

My initial thought after trying it on both is that, on the P6, it brought some "unpredictable" characteristics to the sound that (to a very small extent) were already present in the OB6. But, it magnifies those characteristics in the OB6 (which to many folks will either sound better, or they will just appreciate the nicety of having the option to take the sound there).
From the perspective of someone who owns both a P6 and OB6, I give kudos to Sequential on this one for simultaneous release on both synths, because I prefer feature parity between the two products. I wouldn't want a third page of globals on one and not the other. During music making workflow, I like not having to "rethink" everything as I move from synth to synth because it makes more efficient workflow, and is one reason I like some amount of common ground of user experience on Sequential gear.
But I agree, the vintage knob probably fills a greater functional gap on the P6 than it does the OB6. I will consider it a major upgrade to the Rev2 if they add it there... it will be huge upgrade and an even more welcome addition on that synth!

The beta-version does not works for me, no countdown and a full buffer in Midi-ox, Ob-6 crashed on it. Fortunately I could reinstall 1.5.5, so I'll wait for the official version of 1.6.4

Check you haven't got an alternate tuning selected. I had this happen once after a firmware update: not sure if it was caused by the update or by me messing things up somehow, but I was convinced the OB-6 wouldn't tune properly and ended up talking to support. Part way through the conversation I suddenly realised what was happening: "Err, sorry Andy, it seems I've got an alternate tuning selected..." :-[ ;D
-
[SOLVED]
I started the process from within the bootloader (WRITE + POWER ON) and than it worked, the OB-6 showed 2 countdowns now, great job!
-
The update worked smoothly from 1.5.5 to 1.6.4 beta on my Mac with Sysex Librarian.
The vintage knob functionality is so great :) WOW! Thanks Dave Smith!
A nice New Year present...

Thank you for your interest.
The alternate tuning was one of the first thing I checked.
I disconnected the midi cables and audio cables, leaving only USB and Power.
Sent the new firmware (once again), and now it works just fine.
I like the new feature btw!

My OB-6 Desktop running 1.5.5 failed to update about 4 or 5 times using a direct USB connection to the unit. I tried this using two different Mac computers, and also tried slowing down the transfer speed in SysEx Librarian to a low as 50%. I should say I've never had problems updating firmware on other hardware. But I think this was the first time updating firmware on this unit. The failed updates wouldn't start the countdown from 8, after finishing the countdown from 999. Finally, it was successful (on the first try) by using the boot loader option, and using an Alyseum U3-88c USB MIDI interface. Cheers~
-
Many thanks to the team for the updates.
Playing with the ob6 tonight and p6 tomorrow.
Seems to like a very small amount of positive vco detune ...lush :P
-
Thanks sequential for this mega feature. You are the best 8)
for me the update works without problems with
"Win XP & emagic AMT8 with C6 Sysex Tool" and again with "Win10 via USB"
-
Apologies if this has been answered already, but does this global detune/vintage selection get saved per patch? I am assuming the answer is no considering it's a global setting. Going to be a few days until some tracks get committed to tape and I can safely play with the new beta. Excited to try it out.
-
No it's global.
-
I wouldn't have thought this, but I've just installed this new firmware update, and my OB6 seems to sound even better than before with that vintage knob thingy!
As a bonus, a small issue I had with the LEDs not being all of the same luminosity (with previous OS except 1.2.0) looks now like it's been fixed too!
I've had to install it using the Bootloader though (hold Write+ power on and via MIDI cable), because via USB (my usual way) didn't complete at first.
A big THANK YOU to Sequential for making this update available! You've made a believer out of me. :) 8)
P.S. that Vintage Knob would also be very cool for the REV2!
-
Hey folks! I noticed on my OB6 desktop I have to turn on vintage mode every time I power up the unit, its state doesn’t seem to be being saved. Anyone else experience the same?

Is there a NRPN or CC that I can program to toggle between the Detune and Vintage from my controller? NRPN 33 (detune) works great, once I am there (have toggled to Vintage from Detune).. but I'd like to program a button on my controller to get there.

Great update, thank you!

I didn't see anything here about MPE...is that in a separate update??

No it's part of the same OS as the vintage slop.

Hold the "transpose" buttons and press the "3" button.
If you have the desktop module, to display the internal temperature, press the "hold" and "portamento" buttons and press number 3
Desktop version still working here..
-
This sounds so cool on my OB6 I would love to see this on my Prophet rev2
-
Just for the record, it worked flawlessly for me using Bome's "Send SX" utility (https://www.bome.com/products/sendsx) on Win10 and my RME UC's MIDI out.
After updating the OS, it is recommended to reset the global settings (hold button GLOBALS and press WRITE) but I was puzzled that this does not give any visual feedback, the only way to see whether it worked is to change a global setting before the reset to see if it changed.
Also, I read that pressing "4" would toggle the setting when actually the buttons BANK SELECT and TENS SELECT are used for that. Took me a while to figure out why it wasn't working. So what worked for me was:
Hold BANK (check that the cursor appears on the 1st digit as if ready for entering the sound bank number) and while still holding it press GLOBALS. That puts you into the 3rd page of GLOBALS setings (both GLOBALS lights light up), which is not mentioned in the manual. Press "4" to select the setting to select between detune and vintage. Use the buttons BANK SELECT and TENS SELECT to toggle between the values. These settings are active immediately and do not require any saving (WRITE or similar).
-
How do I activate the new Vintage mode once I've installed the latest firmware?
Oh, I got it. Hold "bank" and then hit "globals". This is a 3rd page of globals. Press button "4". This is Vintage on/off. His the "select" button to toggle up to "on".
Sweet.
Thanks chipaudette, I don't understand why this info is not placed by the Sequential team on the topic where we can download the 1.6.6 beta version but anyway your message is here and so useful.

1) Upload went flawlessly, first time with MIDI-OX from Win10 over USB.
2) This is a wonderful, tonally significant update. It's like a magic, now all my patches sound better knob.
I think my favorite thing about Dave Smith's instruments is how well judged the controls are. Every control has a useful control range. The effect of the control is clearly audible. The range produces useful sounds. This OB-6 has just been a delight. Easy to program, sounds great, and now, even better with a bit of "vintage" slop.
The OB-6 is one of my simpler synths, but such a keeper. It just sounds great. Thanks for this update!

Agree with all of this. The update was simple and you really CAN hear the difference, made an already great sounding synth even better. I get why Shoebridge went for two P6's instead of a P10. Not sure I would switch from the Ob6 to a new OBX (if Sequential does one) given how great this already sounds and the sequencer/effects, etc. it has.
