Prophet 10 vs 5 Volume

Prophet 10 vs 5 Volume
« on: April 07, 2024, 05:51:00 AM »
Hi,

I was recently lucky enough to have both a P10 and P5 in my studio and noticed that the P5 was noticebly hotter - i needed to set the P10 much higher to get the same output as the P5 (both on latest firmware, globals reset and tuned)

Is this expected and the P10 has more headroom built in? Or should there not be a noticeble difference between the two?

I would have expected this as the output for 10 voices needs to be adjusted down so as to not overwhelm the signal. Same as the fact a monosynth has a higher output per voice than a polysynth.

Can also depend on what kind of sound you use ...
Try the same "Factory" sound on both synts and compare  :)

On the other hand, it does not really matter. Every instrument, microphone,
line gizmo has different outout ...   That's what volume / gain knobs are for   ::)

Cheers !

Both are on same FW version, same factory patch, same cable into same Mackie mixer input when A/B'ing them but the P5 is dialled back around 50% of the P10 on the Volume pot to get similar output - the idea of leaving more headroom for the P10 makes sense, but curious about if I expanded the P5, would it then be even hotter!?

I’d imagine there’d be a bit of code that adjusts the levels when the second board is detected and active, though that’s just a guess.

Wonder if putting the P10 into P5 mode would do the opposite and cause an increase.

I have tried the P10 in P5-mode and it doesn't seem to cause the volume to jump up, but what you suggest does sound possible re: detecting voicecards on boot
